One Room Challenge Week 6: Overhead Light Battle Won
Welcome to Week 6 of the One Room Challenge! It’s been quite a journey and with only 2 weeks left I am feeling both nervous about what is left to accomplish and impressed by what has already been done.
Last week, I updated about my attempts to create an overhead light fixture and the challenges that went along with it. This week I was determined to finish what I started.
After spending several days of this week out of town, I only had a small amount of time to make the necessary improvements to make this floppy little fixture into the sculptural, organic piece I was picturing.
As a reminder, this was me last week:
An UNCONVINCED woman
After thinking through what I didn’t like (again, emotional uncertainty pictured above), I decided that I really wanted this shape to feel more defined. For this go-a-round, I decided to add more pleats to define the orb and then stiffen the fabric with a cornstarch mixture.
Homemade fabric stiffener with cornstarch and water
Generously applied the stiffener over a plastic bucket
Once dry, I did my best to iron the fixture, since the starch seems to activate well with heat.
While it could certaibnly be more rigid, I am happy with the general shape and texture.
I got some great advice on creating an armature first and bonding the fabric to it like you would a lampshade. I am definitely interested in giving that method a try, but wanted to see what I could do with my original plan first.
A few discrete panel nails to the ceiling, and this piece is up! While it’s not 100% what I was picturing, it’s pretty close and I am proud of the skills I learned along the way.
And as a lovely surprise, the area rug I ordered arrived ahead of schedule!
It is so rewarding to see this picture. Each week has had its set backs and victories, but to see so much of my efforts really start to come together is so exciting.
For this upcoming Week 7, I’m hoping to have some major art updates and get this room secured for a nice cozy, eclectic reveal.
See you next week!
